Delimondo’s fall from grace: Netizens react on the once breakfast favorite, now a hated corned beef brand

Even with its alluring taste and beefy goodness, Delimondo, one of the Philippines’ favorite corned beef brand, couldn’t save face because of its close association. Philippine social media is abuzz because of a campaign to boycott Delimondo, a brand by the company JAKA, which is owned by Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile.

The senator recently appeared in a Facebook video interview where he said that the country was “peaceful” and that Filipinos were “free” during those tumultuous years. It should be noted though that he was a former Defense Minister in the Martial Law years and was the one who helped enforce it. Enrile was interviewed in the video by Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., the late dictator’s son, where he declared, “Name me one person that was arrested simply because he criticized President Marcos. None.” He also claimed that massacres didn’t happen during that time.

According to a part of GMA News research, however:

  • GMA News Research shows that late Senators Ninoy Aquino, Jose Diokno, Francisco Rodrigo, several businesspersons, lawyers, journalists, and teachers were imprisoned during the 21-year period.
  • The book “Dark Legacy: Human Rights Under the Marcos Regime” by Alfred McCoy and reports by Amnesty International recorded 3,200 victims of extrajudicial killings, 77,000 political detainees, 3,500 torture victims, and more than 700 disappearances from 1975 to 1985.
  • 77 percent of the victims of extrajudicial killings were summarily executed.
  • Enrile himself signed the “Human Rights Victims Reparation and Recognition Act of 2013” or a law that recognizes victims of abuse during Martial Law as the Senate president.

A Facebook post by user Maoi Arroyo became viral:

“With great reluctance I am now boycotting the otherwise excellent corned beef of Delimondo and all other JAKA group products, services, and properties.

Because Enrile is one of the slimiest politicians in a country where the average politician flings idiocy from their pores and their policies shape shift to suit the most effective strategy to steal from us.”

Here are some reactions from netizens:

Put him out of business and out of politics

‘Manufacturer of lies’

It’s a little sacrifice for the truth

‘Tastes like pork barrel’

‘It’s too salty and pricey anyway’

‘Canned liar’
