May is finally upon us, which is just like any other month for us mere mortals, but it’s a very important date for celebrities, fashion industry, and the world of art. The 2018 Met Gala is set for Monday, May 7, and it’s been causing buzz several months before. It is, after all, the fashion world equivalent of the Oscars, where stylists, glam team, and designers all anticipate well ahead before the event. Formally called the Costume Institute Gala and also known as the Met Ball, it is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. Each year a theme is set to reflect the fashion trends, pay tribute to a designer, or make a statement on the current political climate.
This year’s theme is “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” which, according to Vogue, is “designed to create a dialogue between fashion and the masterworks of religious art in the museum’s holdings.” The show will be presented in a trinity of locations: the Anna Wintour Costume Center, the medieval galleries at the Met’s Fifth Avenue location, and further uptown at the Cloisters.
In anticipation for this big night in fashion, we take a look back at some of the best MET Gala looks:
Trust Riri to reign as queen of the MET Gala as she always turns heads in avante garde looks only she could pull off.
If there’s anyone who deserves to be on the top spot as Riri, it would have to be Beyonce, who never fails to show off her golden curves with each look.
Another star who consistently wins the MET Gala is Blake, with amazing goddess looks and tall height that make her a designer’s muse.
Zendaya turned up the volume in this stunning Dolce & Gabbana look, from her hair, balloon skirt, and bright prints.
Lupita flawlessly pulled off this glittery Calvin Klein look topped with her hair that is literally over the top.
Nicole looked every bit ethereal in this celestial-inspired Alexander McQueen gown.
Emma brought a fresh two-toned pink Thakoon look on the red carpet which caught everyone’s attention with its beautiful simplicity.
The “Beauty and the Beast” star was a vision of grace and sophistication in a sweeping Calvin Klein gown.
The award-winning singer brought a stunning old world glamour on the red carpet, which makes us want to scream: “Bring the old Taylor back!”
Speaking of old world glam, there’s something about Amal that makes us believe she’s from the golden age of Hollywood where class and sophistication reign supreme.
At the 2017 Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art Of The In-Between theme, Lily perfectly embodied the look of exaggerated proportions.
